A Fall Girls’ Weekend in Appanoose County: Maddie’s Experience and Upcoming Events

Maddie W, from Washington, Iowa, recently hosted a girls’ weekend in Appanoose County with her friends Raegan and Lauren, all in their 30s. When the group planned their annual trip, Centerville wasn’t their first choice. However, after hearing about the town’s historic charm and variety of activities, they decided to visit—and were pleasantly surprised by what they discovered. Here’s Maddie’s recommended itinerary for a perfect fall getaway in what she now calls a hidden gem of southern Iowa.

Friday: Arrival and Drinks

The weekend started with check-in at The Continental Hotel, a cozy spot that immediately set the tone for a relaxing getaway. After settling in, the group headed to Pit Pony Pub & Eatery, where the PACT crew welcomed them with specialty apple cider mimosas. Maddie noted that the drink, with its crisp and spiced flavor, was the perfect seasonal treat. Dinner followed at Lucile’s, where they enjoyed a comforting meal in a welcoming atmosphere, ideal for kicking off their weekend in style.

Saturday: Exploring Downtown Centerville

Saturday morning began with coffee and a light breakfast at Tangleberries, which Maddie described as a charming café with the perfect fall ambiance. With coffee in hand, they joined the Movin’ On Up tour hosted by PACT, which turned out to be a highlight of their trip. The tour offered a fascinating look at Centerville’s historic downtown buildings, showcasing their history, renovations, and unique design elements. Maddie was especially impressed by the creativity and effort going into these projects, saying it added a new layer of appreciation for the town.

The afternoon was spent exploring the shops downtown. Their first stop was Bonnie’s Needful Things, where Maddie and her friends each found something they didn’t know they needed—ranging from vintage treasures to home decor. The group also visited Tangleberries’ visiting pop-up shop, Bello & Co  and Amazing by Grace, both of which Maddie recommended for their diverse and stylish offerings. She noted that whether shopping for oneself or picking up gifts, the stores cater to a variety of tastes and budgets.

A late lunch back at Pit Pony provided a welcome break before the group wrapped up their evening with dinner at George and Nick’s, a local favorite serving up what Maddie described as some of the best pizza she’s ever had.

Sunday: A Cozy Farewell

On Sunday morning, the group enjoyed breakfast at Soula’s, a cozy and welcoming spot perfect for a relaxed send-off. Over coffee, they reflected on their weekend, and Maddie shared how much they appreciated the town’s warm and inviting atmosphere. She described Appanoose County as a “hidden gem” they had never considered as a tourist destination before, but now one they would definitely recommend.
