Twenty years ago, Appanoose County voters made a decision to invest in the future of our communities. Through the creation of a hotel/motel tax and the establishment of the Appanoose County Tourism Commission, they created a dedicated funding source focused on growing visitation, supporting local attractions and events, and showcasing everything that makes Appanoose County special. What started as a vision for attracting more visitors has grown into a tool that has helped strengthen communities, support local businesses, and create experiences enjoyed by both residents and guests alike.
This report is an opportunity to look back and celebrate what has been accomplished together over the past two decades. From signature events and outdoor recreation projects to downtown revitalization efforts and destination marketing campaigns, tourism funding has helped turn ideas into reality across Appanoose County. The pages that follow tell the story of those investments, the partnerships that made them possible, and the lasting impact they’ve had on our county. While there is always more work to be done, we believe these past 20 years are something worth celebrating, and an exciting foundation for what comes next.

While the dollar amounts and statistics help illustrate the scale of tourism’s impact, the true value of these investments can be found in the experiences they create and the momentum they generate throughout Appanoose County. Tourism funding has helped communities preserve their history, enhance outdoor recreation opportunities, strengthen downtown districts, and create events that bring residents and visitors together. From community festivals and youth sporting facilities to campground improvements and historic preservation projects, these investments have helped make Appanoose County a place people want to visit, and a place residents are proud to call home.
The impact extends far beyond the projects themselves. Tourism dollars have often served as seed funding, helping local organizations and communities secure additional grants, attract private investment, and move projects from ideas to reality. Early investments in Main Street Centerville helped lay the groundwork for millions of dollars in public and private improvements. Recreation projects have enhanced quality of life while creating new reasons for visitors to explore the county. Events and attractions supported through tourism funding continue to generate overnight stays, visitor spending, and positive exposure for Appanoose County. Looking back over the past 20 years, one thing is clear: when communities invest in their destinations, the benefits reach far beyond tourism alone.

The story of tourism in Appanoose County isn’t just about where we’ve been…it’s about where we’re headed next. The past 20 years have laid a strong foundation, but some of our biggest opportunities are still ahead of us. The reopening of Honey Creek Resort, continued investments in outdoor recreation, ongoing downtown revitalization efforts, and the growth of signature events all position Appanoose County to attract more visitors than ever before. As visitor expectations continue to evolve, so too will our efforts to create memorable experiences that encourage people to stay longer, spend more, and return again and again.
The numbers tell an encouraging story. Visitor spending in Appanoose County has grown more than 21% since 2016 and has rebounded more than 37% from the pandemic low in 2020. In 2024 alone, visitors generated $39.2 million in spending, supported 344 local jobs, and contributed more than $9 million in state and local tax revenue. Those dollars ripple through nearly every sector of the local economy, from restaurants and retail stores to lodging providers, recreation businesses, and community attractions.
As we reflect on the last two decades, we’re grateful for the countless volunteers, community leaders, businesses, organizations, and local governments who have helped make these successes possible. Tourism is not built by a single event, attraction, or organization, it is the result of communities working together over time to create places people want to visit and experiences they want to share.
The accomplishments highlighted in this report were not achieved overnight. They are the result of years of planning, partnership, and sustained investment in Appanoose County’s future. As new opportunities emerge, from destination development and outdoor recreation to downtown revitalization and major attractions, we believe continued collaboration and a long-term perspective will be essential to building on the momentum that has been created.
The goal remains the same as it was twenty years ago: strengthening Appanoose County by supporting projects and experiences that attract visitors, generate economic activity, and enhance quality of life for residents. The past 20 years have shown what is possible when communities invest in themselves, and we look forward to continuing that work together in the years ahead.
